Safety Professionals team are happy to meet you professionals with the useful Information !!
Every candidates facing the difficulties during the NEBOSH GC 3 Practical assessment. Many candidates are refereed in GC 3 ,even if they completed their IGC 1 & GC 2 Successfully.
Why the candidates are refereed in GC 3 ??
Whats the reason behinds the failure ??
You should know this valuable information before you start your preparation , to avoid referral in GC 3 !!
Its simple to clear if you follow our Guidelines ..
1. NEVER COPY FROM INTERNET :
nebosh igc 3 practical examination tips
This is the most common mistake every candidates doing their preparation .
Remember Nebosh can easily identify by using plagiarism checker !
2.NEVER COPY FROM YOUR FRIENDS REPORT :
Most of the candidates will commit the common mistake. Copying the friends report , who completed the Nebosh in previous years !
Remember Nebosh will always back up the students report ,and they can easily identify the plagiarism! so never do that one !
3.NEVER REPEAT THE SAME HAZARDS :
Remember you should identify minimum of 20 Uncontrolled hazards from minimum of 5 different types of hazards .
Example physical, chemical, biological , fire hazards etc.
Never exceeds from 30 observations .
4.FOCUS ON MARKING SCHEME :
nebosh igc 3 practical examination tips and guidance
Many of the candidates prepare their observations well , but accidentally they failed to concentrate on other areas of the report like main findings , executive summary , legal breaches ,etc.
Remember observations only hold 30 Marks , with that you could not pass so it is essential to concentrate on other areas .
5.REPRESENT RISK WHILE MENTIONING HAZARD :
Mentioning the hazards alone will not offer you the marks , it is essential to state the risk level associated with , then only you can grab the marks .
Example : If you mention that the “un guarded machine as hazard” that is not enough , you should mention that “risk of entanglement , fall into machinery and ejection of machine parts will leads to severe injury and even fatal if it is operated “
The simple concept is that you should make your report to convince the management, so it is essential to describe.
6.SUGGEST REALISTIC CONTROL MEASURES :
nebosh igc 3 practical examination tips
While suggesting the control measures candidates normally doing the 3 category of mistakes such as ,
A)Mentioning the control measure which is not suitable for the hazard .
Example :
if you mentioning that flammable materials stored in a room and there is a possibility to accumulation of flammable gas , suggesting the LEV is not suitable .
You should suggest the control measure which is appropriate like Dilution ventilation or store in open area to eliminate or to reduce the hazard etc .
B)Suggesting the PPE alone as control measure to control the hazard.
Remember wearing PPE will not eliminate the hazard and as we studied in GC 2 PPE should be an least control measure we suggest.
Example : If you mentioning that the petrol driven machine producing heavy noise , first you should try to eliminate by avoiding the operation if possible , or by changing the process (gluing rather than screwing) or by changing the fuel (Battery operated / electrically operated) .
Then we shall suggest the control measure to reduce the risk by relocating , isolating , silencing , damping etc.
c) Suggesting only the immediate control measures : Most of the candidates only suggesting the control measure for the identified hazard , but remember HSE Professionals should suggest the long tern actions to maintain the residual risk with in accepted level.
Example : If you suggesting the “Poorly maintained machine develops noise as hazard” Maintenance action should carried out & damping should be done is an Immediate control measure .
One time actions shall not control the risks forever , so we should suggest long term actions like
Proper preventative maintenance regime should be developed” .
Fault reporting procedures should be developed ,
Employees including machine operators should be trained to identify hazards and to report and to carry out work safely etc.
7.NEVER RELY ON GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS :
Most of the candidates not clear about the difference between engineering controls and administrative controls . and even the hierarchy of risk control procedure .
Maximum candidates rely on only general recommendations like “safety courses training” before that there are many ways to eliminate the hazards by avoiding the task or by changing the process etc.
So recommend the control measures always based on the hierarchy of risk control which is generally accepted.
8.FOLLOW THE GENERAL RULES :
Prepare structured report
Identify minimum of 20 hazards
Mention general legal applications
prepare the report to convince management & persuasive
Never fall below 500 Words
Mention immediate , medium , long term actions to control risk
Compare actual cost of remedial action vs cost of failure to act
It is useless to prepare a report without knowledge of the formal expectations from the examiners .
So get a look in to the nebosh marking procedure in GC3 .
1.Observation :
1 a ) Range of hazards – (0- 15 Marks)
2)Quality of suggested control measures (0- 15 Marks)
2.Introduction
about the company (should be clear)- 0-5 Marks
3.Executive summary
(overview of important findings and suggestions and conclusions) – 0-5 Marks
4.Main findings of the Inspection
(Include only the high risk issues) :
4 a ) Quality of main findings – 0 – 15 Marks
4 b ) Identification of possible breaches of law 0 – 5 Marks
4 c ) Report persuasiveness & technical content – 0-10 Marks
5.Conclusions & Recommendations :
5 a ) Clear conclusion related to report findings and effectiveness of convincing management – 0 – 15 Marks
5 b ) Recommendations related to findings and it should be realistic to to improve health and safety- 0 – 15 Marks
So now the candidates shall have a clear idea about the GC 3 Report & what clearly the nebosh expects from you !!!
Lets we Go from the First step !!
WHAT YOU SHOULD REMEMBER BEFORE FILL YOUR OBSERVATION SHEET ??
Many of the candidates doing the common mistake is that only identifying the missing of PPE & Poor housekeeping etc .
Remember Missing of PPE & Poor house keeping are also the factors to be considered but beyond that there is a lot to look !!
What are they ???
1. Is the Premises safe to work ! (Ex: Safe access and egress , safe lighting levels , safe temperature, free from hazards etc )
2.Is the Plant & Machinery safe to work ! (Ex :Adequately installed , Guarded , Inspected , Maintained , Cleaned etc )
3.Is the Process safe to work ! (Ex: Way of lifting in manual handling , Way of using chemicals , way of material storage , way of working behaviors)
4.Is the substances used at work are safe or without imminent risk ! (Ex: Free from radio active materials and toxic substances )
5.Is the safe system of work Implemented and maintained ! (Ex :Permit to work control procedures )
6.Is the persons are competent and properly trained !
7.Is the sufficient level of supervision provided !
8..Is their any presence of vulnerable people ! (Ex : Color blindness, wheel chair users , etc. ), Do they have sufficient level of provisions to manage risk ex : Special emergency plan.
9.Safe Behavior : Do the employees behave safely ??
10.Personal Protective Equipment : Do the employees wearing PPE , Do they properly trained ??
Most of the candidates concentrating on “working without PPE “ but you should remember PPE is only the least control measure to control the risk based on hierarchy of risk control !
SIMPLE EXAMPLE TO OPTIMIZE YOUR INSPECTION :
NEBOSH GC 3 EXAMPLES , SAMPLES TO UNDERSTAND
Scenario : 5 Employees working with cement mixer including one pregnant women in an open environment.
Unsafe Plant and Machinery : Poorly maintained cement mixer producing excessive level of noise !
Unsafe process : The loading of cement into cement mixer carried out manually which requires frequent twisting and over reaching !
Unsafe substance : Cement mixing operation is carried out without necessary protection , Dry cement which is highly irritant and wet cement which is highly corrosive.
Unsafe Behavior : Working with poorly maintained equipment and working with corrosive substance shows the poor competency .
Presence of Vulnerable people : loading of cement carried out by pregnant lady increase the probability of harm and foreseeable severity too!
Failure of safe system of work : The operation carried out with poorly maintained machine , unsafe premises , poorly trained personal , failure to wear PPE everything shows the failure of safe system of work !!
So remember , to pass the examination you should :
how to pass nebosh igc 3 examination ,
1.Concentrate all the areas Observation , Introduction , executive summary , Main findings , conclusions , recommendations etc.
2. You should focused on all the areas like premises , plant and equipment , peoples behavior etc .
3.You should identify the relevant applicable regulations .
